Commonly referred to as pot marigold, calendula is a herbaceous flower renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties.

A superpower herbal alternative used to treat topical skin conditions, this can be found in household medical cupboards to treat many common ailments. So what is it and what are some of the benefits that can support your family’s needs? Let’s take a look.

What’s calendula oil good for?

Readily talked about in the naturopathic community, calendula is a brightly-coloured edible flower with many homeopathic qualities. Used most often for topical skin irritations like diaper rash, superficial wounds, and burns, it’s often called on for its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties.

With so many uses and potential benefits, how can your health and wellness routine benefit from this everyday herb? Here are its five most common uses and benefits:

Wound recovery: some studies show that applying this natural oil to superficial wounds can reduce recovery time as well as redness, swelling, and bruising.
Diaper Rash: to soothe discomfort, redness, and irritation in little ones, this natural herb can be a safe alternative to fragrance laden diaper creams that may further irritate the skin. For the best results, it can also be mixed with aloe vera for extra calming properties
Collagen Support: to achieve a healthy, radiant glow, calendula skin care products can boost epidermal collagen leading to increased hydration and elasticity
Reduced Scarring: supporting the wound healing process with anti-bacterial and moisturising properties, it can also help minimise the risk of scarring and support new tissue growth.
Skin Protection: high in antioxidant properties including flavanoids and polyphenols, this herb can help protect from and reduce environmental stressors on the skin.

How can I use it?

An easy and accessible way to incorporate this herbal remedy into your first aid kit is to source a high-quality calendula cream, ointment or oil. Best applied to topical skin conditions where no allergies to ragweed or daisies are present, this herb can help calm and relieve discomfort for common irritations like diaper rash, scrapes and burns.

With the most common topical applications of calendula available in cream, oil and ointment forms, which product is right for you? Let’s look at the best uses for each.

Creams: a thick application product best for topical applications that need long-wear protection and benefits, creams can be applied to irritated skin that needs the product to stay in place.
Oils: a more malleable, easy to spread concentration, oils have a lighter weight and faster drying time than most creams with no less beneficial hydrating benefits.
Ointments: the most concentrated calendula formula, ointments are thick, slow to absorb treatments that are used best in small to medium coverage areas.
